After a survey carried out by CAF in 2000, it was established that the population of Belfast was made up of 21% Senior Citizens. It was further recognised that this group of people had been excluded in Artistic participation.
Following these findings a lunchtime seminar, Senior Citizens in the Arts was held in order to address the needs relevant to Senior Citizens participating in the Arts.
The aims of the project were to raise the profile of senior citizens and
encourage their participation in the arts.
Speakers Included:
- CAF
- Age Concern
- Help the aged
- Southern Counterpart (exchange of views/experiences)
Invited Representatives from around NI:
- Senior Citizens
- Age Concern Co-ordinators
- Help the Aged Co-ordinators

Progressing further from this, another inspiring and informative seminar on arts for older people was held on Wednesday 25 April 2001. The seminar was hosted by Community Arts Forum and the Greater East Belfast Network. It was opened by the minister for culture, arts and leisure, Michael Mc Gimpsey and was attended by over 70 participants, representing Health Trusts, Social Services, voluntary sector organisations and arts organisations.
