Further information about the programme

Throughout the years 2004, 2005 and 2006, much of the CAF’s work focused on exploring the role of arts and culture in both creating and resolving conflicts. This work was challenging, exciting, rewarding and innovative. It provided a platform for dialogue locally on using the arts within conflict resolution work and it fed into other debates on the topic, creating a wider societal space for dealing with the past.

CAF hosted two major conferences during 2005 and 2006.

Arts: towards an inclusive society - 21st and 23rd October 2005, was organised in partnership with Belfast City Council and Belfast Festival at Queen’s. The conference took place in Belfast Waterfront Hall and attracted 200 delegates from 18 different nationalities.

Cultures and Conflicts - 23rd and 25th November 2006, was organised in partnership with the Beat Initiative locally and two European networks, Les Rencontres and Banlieues d’Europe. The conference was held in the Spectrum Centre and attracted 225 delegates from 19 different countries.

Role of the seminar programme
A series of workshops and discussions during the two conferences took place in community centres throughout the city. A seminar launched the programme of events and a comprehensive seminar programme connected the two conferences. The conferences dovetailed with and enhanced a Peace 2 funded programme named Active Citizenship which CAF ran throughout 2006, 2007 and 2008.

This was a major programme of work for CAF and would not have been possible without the expertise and knowledge of key players and the support of funders.

Patricia Freedman was conference director throughout the two conferences. She brought invaluable international experience and excellent organisational and planning skills to the process and showed great insight throughout. Niamh Flanagan acted as conference administrator during the 2006 conference. Niamh brought a huge amount of local knowledge which enhanced the workshop programme as well as extensive event management experience. Chris Ball, CAF information officer, for his excellent publicity and marketing of both conferences and compiling this comprehensive web resource. Gerri Moriarty chaired the two conferences. She was thorough, committed and knowledgeable and combined this with excellent facilitation skills, making her an ideal chair.
